Research Overview
| Sporulating cells of Bacillus megaterium QM B1551 |
Welcome to the Molecular Microbiology group web-site. The group is led by Dr Graham Christie, and is part of the "Biotechnology" cluster within the Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology, University of Cambridge.
Research conducted by the Molecular Microbiology group focuses primarily on the application of molecular biology and biochemical techniques to study the process of cellular differentiation (germination) that dormant spores of the genera Bacillus and Clostridium undergo when stimulated to return to the vegetative state.
In addition to being of intrinsic interest, a major objective of our work is to consider structural and functional insights to the spore germination apparatus in the context of public health, food safety, counter-terrorism and environmental decontamination, and to determine how such information might best be applied to improve current capabilities in these sectors.
