The biggest honour in the world of combustion is to receive one of the three Gold Medals awarded every other year at one of the huge International Symposia of The Combustion Institute.

This August in Beijing at the 33rd Symposium, attended by some 1200 people, Professor Hayhurst received The Alfred C Egerton Medal, which  is awarded  "For distinguished, continuing and encouraging contributions to the field of combustion".

The citation on Professor Hayhurst's medal reads "For brilliant contributions in several diverse aspects of combustion science, particularly ionisation, pollutants, fluidised bed combustion and chemical looping".
