Continuous Optimization in Chile

Dr Vassilios Vassiliadis is currently in Chile as Visiting Professor at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso (PUCV).
He is presenting a course on Continuous Optimisation.
Optimisation is one of the key technologies that engineers both in academia and industrial practice use nowadays systematically when it comes to modelling and designing systems. The course aims to motivate the necessity for its understanding by highlighting key applications, and in its first part to provide the basic mathematical background on which to build the presentation of techniques relevant to engineering application. The second part presents in detail Linear Optimisation problem formulation and solution, as it is an aspect that makes clearer general concepts and is of industrial importance in its own right. The final third part of the course presents advanced topics, particularly nondifferentiable optimisation and duality theory with the aim of introducing systematically decomposition techniques that are of great importance in the solution of large scale problems.
Further to this, Dr Vassiliadis (on the left) is working with Professor Raul Conejeros (on the right) and his research group on topics of common interest with the PSE group in Cambridge, such as the optimisation-based design of biochemical process flow sheets and the analysis of biochemical reaction pathways with the aim of producing optimisation based predictions for their modification.
Professor Conejeros is himself a graduate of our Department, having worked in the PSE group for his PhD and postdoctoral research. After completion of his studies in our University, he returned to his alma mater in Chile where he rose to the rank of full professor. He works at the School of Biochemical Engineering, at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso (Pontificial Catholic University of Valparaíso).
