Twenty-nine new US Gates scholars will take up their places at Cambridge this autumn, including Mohammad Ghassemi and Lesley Mann who will study for the MPhil in Bioscience Enterprise (MBE) in this department.
Mohammad Ghassemi, who grew up in Las Cruces, New Mexico, is the first Gates scholar from New Mexico State University. He hopes eventually to use a combination of business and scientific knowledge to start his own bioengineering company with the aim of improving human health through technology.
Miss Lesley Mann is from Calhoun, a rural Kentucky town. After the MBE, she plans to pursue a Ph.D. in Biochemistry at Yale before beginning a career as an eco-entrepreneur.
Current students at the department include six Gates Cambridge Scholars, three studying for the MPhil in Advanced Chemical Engineering (ACE), two taking the MBE and one studying for a PhD.
