Dr Jim Thompson, Computer Systems Manager, retires today, 14 November 2014.
Jim has been with the department for 38 years and has seen many changes. He began working here when Prof John Davidson was head of department and has survived four subsequent heads. He has seen the department grow and computer hardware shrink in physical size but grow exponentially in terms of memory and storage space.
There has been a series of lunches to mark the event. So many friends wanted to wish him well that on Wednesday 12 November an Indian restaurant was completely taken over. The "official" leaving party will take place on 12 December.
Jim has worked with everyone in the department and many people relied on his expertise. He was also known for dreadful jokes.
He is being replaced by Dr Iain Morrison.
We wish Jim every happiness in his retirement.
