Young people of the year finalist: Katie Holmes

Katie and Caroline

Katie Holmes is currently in the fourth year of her MEng in Chemical Engineering, but still finds time to help other people.

Katie volunteered to help fellow student Caroline Daboo, a wheelchair user, so they could complete their Duke of Edinburgh award together. They have been close friends since and spend hours each week running Guide, Brownie and Rainbow groups in the city.

The Young People of the Year awards, or YOPEYs, are Oscars for young people who give to others. Katie and Caroline nominated each other without realising it and the organisers then put them forward as a joint entry.

The awards ceremony was in September 2014 and although they didn't win, they did well to get to the finals and their commitment and dedication to volunteering deserve recognition - they are really making a difference.
