Matthew Lim has won an EPSRC Overseas Fellowship at the Life Science Interface and will be the Principal Investigator of a grant worth £140k for a project entitled Design of tissue engineering bioreactors using magnetic resonance imaging and two photon microscopy.
The goal of this fellowship is to study a 3D fixed bed bioreactor with the aim of optimising scaffold design and operating parameters. This will be assessed by two techniques, Two-Photon Microscopy (TPM) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). TPM will enable the study of cellular structure in the tissue under different flow conditions and MRI will be used to understand the key factors involved in influencing bioreactor fluid mechanics with the ability to discriminate chemical species. This will allow better understanding of the cells and their interaction under different flow conditions allowing for more efficient design.
This work will be done in collaboration with Professor Linda Griffith at MIT and with Professor Lynn Gladden at Cambridge. As part of this 3 year fellowship, he will spend 12-18 months at MIT studying the 3D bioreactors with TPM and then return to Cambridge to study these same systems using MRI.
