Postgraduate MPhil and PhD Programmes

Around 180 graduate students of the highest calibre study in the department at any time, following either a PhD research programme in Chemical Engineering or Biotechnology or one of the Master's level professional practice courses that provide training in science as well as business and management.   The department is staffed by world-leading interdisciplinary research scientists, many of whom have strong business skills as well as a keen interest in the education of the next generation of researchers, entrepreneurs and innovators. Current students have trained in a broad diversity of disciplines and are a highly international group. As the Department is relatively small students enjoy a close interaction with staff, fellow students and within and between research groups.

Applications are invited for the following research and taught postgraduate degree programmes:

MPhil in Advanced Chemical Engineering (ACE)

Master's in Bioscience Enterprise (MBE)

MPhil class

A unique programme for chemical engineers seeking the skills required by companies in which rapid change and working with developments in other disciplines is the norm. Students combine studies in advanced chemical engineering with essential aspects of business administration and technology transfer. A period of academic research is also included.

MBE class

An intensive biotechnology and business management programme for those with the ambition to found technology companies or take up executive or consultancy roles in the life sciences sector. Students, many of whom already have postgraduate experience in an academic or business environment,  are based at the Institute of Biotechnology and as part of their training undertake a company internship.

MPhil in Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology

PhD in Chemical Engineering or Biotechnology

research

A research degree, which upon successful completion, may count towards the entrance requirements for the Ph.D.  Many students who complete an MPhil go on to study towards a PhD either in Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology at Cambridge or other universities. MPhil candidates undertake a novel piece of research under academic supervision and are examined by thesis and oral examination.

Laboratory work

The University's principal research degree for graduate students, candidates pursue supervised research for a minimum of nine consecutive terms and submit a dissertation based on their findings. The department offers a variety of research possibilities in key chemical and biotechnology areas.
