Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology is a world-leading centre of research and education, with research activities that encompass chemical, biochemical and process engineering and fundamental, strategic and applied biotechnology research and exploitation. Our overall objective is to pursue research and scholarship of the highest international quality at the forefront of experimental and theoretical advances and to achieve a seamless transition from fundamental science to exploitable technology.
The department has modern, well equipped laboratories and continues to invest in state-of-the-art analytical, chemical, biological, imaging, laser, optical and computing facilities. Staff and students have access to extensive and highly-specified IT network facilities, optical and laser darkrooms, chemical synthesis and characterisation laboratories, electronics and biological clean-rooms, cold-rooms and well-equipped media preparation and sterilisation suites, 400MHz NMR, QTOF Premier MS/MS Systems, lasers and optical equipment, HPLC systems, high frequency acoustic measurement systems, flow cytometry, laser dissection microscopy, confocal microscopy, high sensitivity microscopy imaging systems and microbiology laboratories.
At present the Department occupies three sites, with the main laboratories and teaching facilities located on Pembroke Street, the Institute of Biotechnology a short walk away on Tennis Court Road and the Magnetic Resonance Research Centre on the West Cambridge site.
