| Research project title | A Magnetic Resonance Toolkit to Predict Drug Release Rates from Controlled Release Delivery Systems |
| Supervisor | Prof Gladden |
| Advisor | Dr Mantle |
Research description
My project aims to develop nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) experimental protocols to measure a variety of NMR/MRI parameters (e.g. spin-density, diffusion and relaxation) that can be used as direct input parameters for numerical simulations of controlled drug release. The project will address vital issues raised by the pharmaceutical industry such as how drug release profiles are affected by: (i) drug loading and distribution; (ii) the nature of the active ingredient; (iii) excipient formulation; (iv) porosity of the delivery matrix and (v) manufacturing conditions. There is also the opportunity to develop further an existing numerical model capable of predicting simple drug release rates using NMR/MRI data, so that it can be applied to a wide range of controlled drug delivery systems.
