MBE cohort 2019-2020 on IP workshop with Simmons & Simmons

Last week our Masters in Bioscience Enterprise student cohort attended a day workshop on intellectual property at Simmons & Simmons London headquarters.

Simmons & Simmons is an international law firm partner specialising in intellectual property, and the students were invited to attend the workshop at their City Point office. The workshop explored key themes in their bioscience enterprise studies, such as transactional IP, patenting strategy, validity and patentability, as well as brands and copyright.

With the MBE programme team, Simmons & Simmons attorneys put together a detailed programme, combining expert presentations with facilitated group discussion. There was also a practical element to the workshop when students presented their ideas and received feedback from some of the firm’s attorneys.

Students also worked on case studies with a legal expert in small groups, covering patenting strategy, preparing for launch and third party patents, as relevant to a biotech start-up. "Simmons & Simmons provided a fantastic forum for valuable interaction and great discussions," said Franziska Fischer, our MBE programme manager. "They provided networking opportunities with several expert attorneys; it was a hugely valuable exercise for the students involved.

“Thank you to Scott Parker, Amy Crouch and Elsa Glauert for an absolutely brilliant workshop. We were blown away by the programme you put together, the engaging speakers, and the flawless organisation. The student feedback has been fantastic.”

“It was a fantastic workshop and I learnt a lot from interacting with the attorneys," said MBE student Ojal Sarah Paul.

The MBE team is very grateful for the help and support of their course provided by Simmons & Simmons and a range of other corporate partners. If you are interested in getting involved with our MBE programme to support and train the entrepreneurs of the future, please contact the MBE Office.
