Powder of rocks by Jan-Georg Rosenboom

We are pleased to announce the winners of the photography competition.

The first prize winner isPowder of rocks by Jan-Georg Rosenboom. This shows a scanning electron microscope (SEM) image for surface investigation of alpha-lactose monohydrate crystals for pharmaceutical granulation model development.

Microbe friendly colloidosomeThe second prize went to A microbe friendly colloidosomeby Polly Keen. This colloidosome is a microcapsule manufactured by a simple method which can be easily tailored to encapsulate yeast, bacteria and enzymes. The story of this 10 micron spherical shell encompasses many areas of research in CEB; the manufacturing process, the biological compatibility, and the numerous applications from bioreactors to medicine.

World of porosityIn a close third place was another image from Jan-Georg Rosenboom, World of Porosity. This is an X-ray image of granulation products from alpha-lactose monohydrate for porosity investigation.

The first prize will be a £125 Amazon voucher and the second prize will be a £50 Amazon voucher. The winning image will feature on the Department's website, newsletter, around the department, and may receive national and international press coverage.
