The application of FDG is significantly augmented by imaging technologies such as optical microscopy, to allow macro (thickness) and microscopic (microstructure) properties of a deposit layer to be collected simultaneously. We can now characterize surface rheology-microstructure relationships, prior to combining CFD with Computational Solid Mechanics to analyse the interaction of deposits and gauging flows.
