Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology

The department pioneers new processes and product designs, recognising that innovation drives sustainable value. Our goal is to bring about economically-sound processes that have minimal environmental impact, and which use exquisite novel materials with high efficiency and/or which effectively conserve precious resources.

The challenges addressed by our research span from reaction engineering to downstream processing and include carbon abatement, low carbon reaction engineering and the manufacture of multiphase materials with the characteristics necessary for sustainability.

Current research:

  • Controlling complex multi-component, multi-phase systems, from the molecular scale through to modelling plant operation
  • Solutions in fouling and cleaning.
  • Separation and recovery of high-value chemicals present in wastes, such as packaging, used engine oils and tyres.
  • CO2 sequestration
  • Conversion of renewable bio-feedstocks to platform chemicals
  • Low cost purification strategies for biopharmaceuticals
  • Catalytic production of fuels and chemicals
  • Manufacture of multiphase materials with defined structures at the micro and possibly nano-scale.
  • Bioenergy technologies

The department pioneers many new processes and product designs, and we recognize that innovation drives sustainable value. Our goal is to bring about economically-sound processes that have minimal environmental impact, and which effectively conserve precious resources.
