Professor Alex Routh is among the winners of 20 medals and prizes awarded by the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) for 'exceptional contribution to the profession across industry and academia'.

Professor Routh receives the Davidson Medal, which recognises individuals who demonstrate outstanding mentorship to early career chemical engineers, in academia or industry.

The medal is named in the memory of John Davidson, who was an inspirational role model and mentor to many young engineers in his capacity as head of our Department from 1975-1993.

The IChemE's award statement highlights Alex Routh's continued mentoring support for students over the last twenty years which has had 'a significant impact across the student population and community service, promoting the careers of undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as post-doctoral researchers'.

“I have always enjoyed teaching and I am delighted to receive this award for mentorship," said Professor Routh. "It means a lot to be recognised for this and even more to receive a medal named after John Davidson, one of the towering figures of this department.”

Head of Department, Professor Clemens Kaminski, said: "I am absolutely delighted for this well-deserved recognition. Alex has provided outstanding mentorship to a great number of chemical engineers throughout his career. Many of the students and postdocs he has inspired are now in leadership roles in academia and industry."

Over the course of his career, Professor Routh has supervised 21 PhD students to graduation and currently has a further ten PhD students in his research group, as well as supervising 12 postdoctoral researchers with many going into academic posts, and 65 final year undergraduate research projects.
